The Young Black Male Discovery (YBMD) came in a flash, but hit Ghazvini Learning Center with a positive explosion. The class started out with an abundance of uncertainty, but ended with students begging their teachers to come down and be a part of history. I was a second year professional teacher, encountering my first year as part of the Ghazvini team. I was thrilled when my principal informed me that I would be the coordinator of the YBMD. This would give me a chance to work with young black males, like myself, who needed some guidance and understanding, much like I needed growing up.

This program gives the endangered youth a chance, a chance at success, and a chance for a positive future. That is all anyone wants in this life - a chance! Too many young blacks feel that there are no options in life but the “streets.” YBMD shows the kids that “If you believe it, you can achieve it.” I’m glad Mr. Larry Thompson felt a need for this program because it is needed, especially at Ghazvini. The reason why it is definitely needed at Ghazvini is many of the students at this school have given up on life. I am honored to be the one who helps resurrect life back into their souls.

The class started out as all black males, but it ended up with Hispanics and Caucasians in the group. I can’t really focus on the highlights of the program, because each day was an adventure and eye opener. One day that will always live in infamy in my class was when one of my students was killed earlier in the year. The way my students came together and started communicating with the class; I could see my young black males, turning into men right before my eyes. I can’t wait to see the end results of this program because the beginning is so promising. To everyone who played a role in this program, I salute you. To Mr. Thompson who coordinated the program; I commend you!
