Born on July 31, 1986 in Miami, Monique Gillum was raised in Gainesville as the youngest and only girl of seven children born to Frances and Charles Gillum. She graduated from Gainesville High School in 2004 and, during that year, was inducted into Gainesville High Schools 2004 Hall of Fame for her commitment to citizenship. Upon her arrival in Tallahassee, Monique became immediately involved in the political and social justice movement. Monique has used her time to advocate for social justice for citizens on campus and throughout the state of Florida.
In 2005, Monique volunteered to mobilize students to register voters with Arrive with Five voter registration initiative at People for the American Way Foundation. In 2006, Monique Garnered increased recognition as she helped lead a 36 hour sit-in at Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s office, over the beating death of Bay County teen Martin Lee Anderson. A graduate of College Leadership Florida, Gillum was also very active in FAMU’s Student Government Association (SGA), serving as a student senator her freshman and sophomore years, and as student body vice-president her junior year, then her peers elected her as SGA President, serving from 2007-08.
While in office, she was appointed to the following boards and committees: first female student member of the FAMU Board of Trustees; FAMU Provost Search Committee; Florida Student Association and the Leon County Civic Center Authority Board. Moreover, Monique is a member of the Young People for the American Way’s inaugural fellowship class, advisory board, and the only Floridian student chosen to participate in their Front Line Leaders Academy. Monique is a proud member of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,
The Student National Alumni Association, and the Student Coalition for Justice. She is the recipient of the following awards and recognition, Martin Luther King Spirit of Leadership Award, Presidents Leadership Award, and the Florida Achievement Award.
