“I am a graduate of Lincoln High School, the son of proud parents (Vanessa and Timothy). I have had a love of sports for most of my life. My mom was a role model because she also enjoyed sports, especially softball. But our love of sports and my skills were not enough. I am thankful to my mom for making sure I did my school work first, and kept my grades up. The highlight of my twelve years of school was on National Signing Day, I received a football scholarship to Troy State University, in Troy, Alabama, not far away from home. I shared that day of happiness with my mom, dad, both of my grandmother’s along with family and friends.”
Zay’s journey to Troy State included many accomplishments along the way. He was the third team All State Linebacker in 2006 and 2007. He also led the Lincoln team in tackles on defense. However, Zay did not limit himself to football; he was also on the Big Bend Wrestling Team for three years. His honors include District Champ three times, Regional Champ two times, 4th in state 2006, State Runner-Up 2007 and local Wrestler of the Year 2007.
He is a member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, located off of Old St. Augustine Road, where Rev. Willie L. Manning is the pastor. The athlete said that the most important thing that happened to him was when he accepted Christ and was baptized.
Zay also reflected on the pleasure he experienced when he transferred to Lincoln and had an opportunity to play on the same team as his brother. He added that it also helped him to establish a closer relationship with his father, Timothy Lamb and his siblings.
“He has been a real blessing to me,” said Vanessa Hackley. “As a single parent, I wanted to get him involved in positive activities early in life. He started out around five and didn’t really want to at first, and complained about the heat and missing cartoons. But once he became involved in sports, he loved it. Zay also liked to set goals and wanted to do the best that he physically and mentally could. I am very proud of him and his grandfather, Big Red (Willie Hackley) who died in 1999 would have been very proud of his grandson also”.
“Sports have helped me a lot, by staying focused and doing good. It has also helped me to be responsible” he added. I love the Troy State campus and I am looking forward to college.
